BIO
Born and bred on Brooklyn soil, VOODE FE’ LEON MATHELIER has made himself a distinctive force in the worlds of entertainment, art, and fashion. Boasting a muscular frame with 16 body piercings and just about an equal number of custom and self-designed tattoos, his image is nothing short of unforgettable. Accomplished in the fields of music, visual arts, and fashion, Voodo’s work expresses energy as eclectic as his repertoire of talents.

A heavy hitter in the music arena, Voodo’s skills as a songwriter, producer, and performer firmly established him as a force to behold early on. In 1998, Voodo combined forces with Tarun Benson, The Mighty Quin, Ptah, and Simply Black to form Dark Theory. Renowned in underground hip hop circles for their dynamic live performances, Dark Theory rapidly gained prominence among their followers and music enthusiasts. However, despite the successful undertaking of flourishing college circuit tours and the group’s growing popularity, Dark Theory’s unsuccessful attempts to obtain solid support from major labels emphasized the group’s need to refocus. In 2002, Phoenix and the Shadow—the alternative hip hop project and brainchild of lyrical partners in crime, Voodo Fe’ and Tarun Benson—emerged to signify the group’s revitalized focus and rebirth. The group galvanized the underground hip hop scene with their electric performances and signature sound. Known for their raw lyrical content and fusion of aggressive Drum & Bass beats with edgy Rock riffs, sensual Reggae vocals, and alternative Hip Hop style, Phoenix and the Shadow quickly reinforced the strength of a preexisting loyal fan base. The 2005 release of their self-produced, self-titled album defied established music genres by introducing and coining their own versatile sound—“Trippy Star”.

From the inception of Dark Theory to present, Voodo has made it clear that he is no fleeting trend. Establishment of the Dark Theory Music Group in 2005 formalized Voodo’s already proven autonomy and ability to consistently advance the group’s progress. Self-production and independent release of Dark Theory’s single “Overtime” and Phoenix and the Shadow’s EP Different They Think (which reached #32 on the CMJ charts); the Untitled Mix CD (which included remakes of songs by artists like Norah Jones, Coldplay, and Korn); and the recent critically acclaimed, self-titled album (voted Album of the Month by Chicago’s Madd Radio in 2005), further demonstrate Voodo as a virtual juggernaut in alternative hip hop. In addition to receiving such accolades as the ASCAP Plus Award and being voted the Best Live Alternative Hip Hop Band by The Village Voice, these dynamic artists have opened for powerful acts such as Run DMC, Naughty By Nature, MeShell N’degeocello, and Arrested Development.

Currently, Voodo is working on his next, much anticipated solo album while continuing his endeavors with his art and fashion design. A typical musician Voodo is not. As a visual artist, his artwork has been featured in art galleries around the city and his fashion design portfolio boasts an impressive clientele such as Calvin Klein, South Pole, Avirex, G-Unit, Class Players, and Ecko.

• Voodo Fé is an artist that brilliantly blends alternative rock and hip hop aesthetics into a brand of music that moves the body and stimulates the mind. The Brooklyn bred artist has been on the scene for nearly a decade, performing with notable groups including The Dark Theory and Phoenix & The Shadow. Now solo, Voodo Fé is out to take music in a brand new direction. Accompanying Fé on his artistic mission is his highly skilled and dynamic backing band. Voodo Fé’s eclectic style is a breath of fresh air in the relatively stagnant musical landscape.

In many cases, cross-genre productions such as Voodo Fé’s end up rather underwhelming, as stylistic integrity is sacrificed in the name of variety. This is far from the case here as, Fé’s music is very much hip hop as it is alternative. A prime example of this is the song “Crazy” which Features dope vocals from Fé and a dynamic guitar performance from Jared Drace. The pulsating drums of “Dear Doubt” perfectly support Voodo Fé’s distorted introspection. “Go Go” is a pseudo-minimalist banger that illuminates Voodo Fé’s ability to step outside of darkness and make up-tempo, danceable tracks. In a similar vein is “Thou Shalt Not” which finds Fé spitting battle raps over a beat straight out of “Headbanger’s Ball.” On “Belief” Voodo Fé and his band merge hip hop and rock into an absolutely new sound, successfully doing something that many similar artists have failed at over the last fifteen years.

Voodo Fé’s music is a perfect fusion of hip hop and rock and should appeal to fans of both genres. Fé’s outstanding vocals are impeccably complimented by his band’s ability to create vibrant and engaging backing tracks. Working with different styles, but never compromising anything, Voodo Fé is the future of alternative hip hop music.

• Being classified as undeniably WASP-Y for the last two decades, i do what i can to fight that stereotype. The battle may be solely in my dome, and the spoils may be unnoticeable to the general public, but my ego is often sufficiently lifted. I laughed in Office Space when David Herman’s character was sitting in bumper to bumper traffic passionately rapping along to Scarface’s ‘No Tears’, but i also felt a pang of empathy. I’ve been there. More often than not, i AM there…like right now…listening to Voodo Fe. This music is bad ass, and when i listen to it, so am i.

Be that as it may, this isn’t your standard stereotypical hip hop with heavy beats, melodyned vocals, and inane lyrics. This is the real deal a la Saul Williams. As a matter of fact, the hip hop label doesn’t at all suffice. Sure, the beats are often 808 heavy and the flow of Patrick Mathelier’s lyrics is often as relaxed and easy going as what Scarface offered us on ‘No Tears’, but that’s where the walls come down. Listen to ‘Crazy’ and hear Marilyn Manson have a love child with Nas and Trent Reznor….then memorize the lyrics, roll onto the 405, and feel a little more bad ass.
