SPELL 336:
PAUL LOPEZ-ACOUSTIC AND RYTHYM GUITARS-DRUMS-LYRICS.
MARTIN HUERTA-VOCALS-LEAD GUITARS-BASS.
THE GROUP WAS STARTED IN THE EARLY 80'S WHILE WE WERE STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL. AFTER OUR GRADUATION WE DRIFTED APART IN TERMS OF OUR MUSIC BUT REMAINED FRIENDS AND BEGAN TO PLAY TOGETHER ONCE AGAIN IN THE EARLY 90'S. WE PLAYED A FEW SHOWS WHERE WE OPENED UP FOR ARTISTS AS DIVERSE AS GREG ALLMAN AND KURTIS BLOW. WE TOOK A HIATUS WHILE MARTIN MOVED TO SAN FRANCISCO, CA AND I BEGAN A 14 YEAR CARRER IN LAW ENFORCEMENT AS A POLICE OFFICER. AGAIN WE REMAINED IN CONTACT AND REFORMED IN 2007 TO BEGIN RECORDING AND TO CONCENTRATE ON FUTURE SHOWS AND TO MARKET THE MUSIC OF SPELL 336. OUR MUSIC HAS BEEN CALLED EVRYTHING FROM "ALTERNATIVE", "POP", "INDIE", "SHOEGAZE", "DREAMPOP", "ACOUSTIC", ETC. WE CONSIDER OUR MUSIC TO BE JUST THAT-MUSIC. IF ONE INDIVIDUAL ENJOYS OUR MUSIC THEN WE FEEL THAT WE ACCOMPLISHED OUR GOAL. WE HAVE BEEN MUSCIANS FOR OVER THE LAST TWENTY PLUS YEARS. I AM A SELF TAUGHT DRUMMER AND GUITARIST AS WELL AS MARTIN WHO HAS BEEN SINGING VOCALS AND MASTERING THE GUITAR FOR THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME. WE HOPE THAT YOU WILL ENJOY OUR MUSIC AND MOST IMPORTANTLY MY SIGNATURE TRACK "SILENCE". THE SONG IS ABOUT AN EVENT THAT HAPPENED TO ME IN MY LIFE. WE HOPE YOU- THE LISTENER WILL ENJOY OUR MUSIC AS MUCH AS WE HAVE CREATED IT. LISTEN WITH AN OPEN MIND, AN OPEN HEART, AND AN OPEN EAR.

Q1, Who are you & where are you from?

Q2, What does the phrase ‘shoegaze’ mean to you?
BEAUTIFUL MUSIC DRENCHED WITH EVERY GUITAR EFFECT KNOWN TO MAN. THE MORE EFFECTS YOU HAVE THE BETTER IT IS.
Q3, In ten words how would you describe your sound to somebody who has never heard of ‘shoegaze’.
DAMN! THATS A TOUGH ONE. TO BE HONEST IT IS HARD TO DESCRIBE.
Q4, Do you think there is one band that epitomised ‘shoegaze’ and if so why?
COCTEAU TWINS. THEY STARTED EVERYTHING WHETHER YOU AGREE OR NOT. THEY WERE AND ARE THE BEST.
Q5, Slowdive were once described like a musical lasagne –layers of sound. Do you think this is intricate to the whole ‘shoegaze’ style?
I THINK SO. BUT I ALSO FEEL THAT IT DEPENDS HOW INDIVIDUAL BANDS PULL IT OFF.
Q6, A number of the current crop of ‘shoegaze’ bands take ‘ambient and electronic’ music as influences. Why do think this is and has it influenced you?
MAYBE THESE BANDS THINK THAT THIS TYPE OF MUSIC CAN BE CONSIDERED SHOEGAZE AND THEY DONT KNOW ANY BETTER. TO ME IT JUST SOUNDS LIKE WHITE NOISE. IT DOES NOT INFLUENCE ME. I LOVE SOMONE LIKE KRAFTWEK BUT I DONT TRY TO SOUND LIKE THEM.
Q7, What’s your view on My Bloody Valentine reforming and touring? (We understand Alan McGee their former label boss was non too complimentary recently!). Also is there any bands you’d like to reform?
I THINK THAT IT IS GREAT! I AM GLAD THEY ARE OUT ON THE ROAD.NOW I CAN FINALLY SEE THEM PERFORM LIVE. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE COCTEAU TWINS GET BACK TOGETHER.
Q8, What was the last song you listened to and why?
"PINK ORANGE RED" BY THE COCTEAU TWINS. WHY? SHOEGAZE BABY!
Q9, Can you list your five favourite songs of all time, if so what are they and would you consider any to be ‘shoegaze’?
THERE ARE TOO MANY FOR ME TO CHOOSE. NONE OF THEM ARE CONSIDERED SHOEGAZE.
Q10, What is you favourite song you’ve written & why? What song would you have loved to have written?
MY SONG "SILENCE". IT WAS WRITTEN IN FIVE MINUTES. I HAVE ALWAYS FELT THAT THE SONGS THAT COME TO YOU THE QUICKEST ARE THE ONES THAT WILL LAST. I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HAVE WRITTEN 10CC'S-"IM NOT IN LOVE". AND "STEAM ENGINE" BY MY MORNIG JACKET. WHAT A GREAT FUCKING SONG! ESPECIALLY THE LIVE VERSION. I AM A SENTIMENTAL SAP. SO FUCKING WHAT!!
Q11, What’s your myspace page called? What do you think myspace has to offer bands & artists? How many friends have you got and how many are actual friends?
myspace/spell336 MYSPACE HAS GIVEN ALOT OF ARTISTS SUCH AS MYSELF THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE OUR MUSIC HEARD AROUND THE WORLD. THE EXPOSURE IS THE GREATEST THING ABOUT IT. MAKE A DEMO IN YOUR BEDROOM AND FIVE MINUTES LATER IN SOME REMOTE PART OF THE WORLD SOMONE IS LISTENING TO IT. THAT IS JUST CRAZY! I HAVE OVER 2000 FRIENDS. ABOUT 40 PERCENT ARE MY FRIENDS. BUT, THERE IS ALSO A LARGE PERCENT OF FRIENDS WHO HAVE REQUESTED ME BECAUSE OF THE MUSIC. THESE ARE FRIENDS THAT I DO NOT KNOW PERSONALLY.

Q13, What’s the best and worst thing you’ve ever seen written about you?
TOO MANY TO MENTION. BUT I AM ALSO INVOKING MY FIFTH AMENDMENT RIGHT TO AVOID SELF-INCRIMINATION.

Just noticed we've had a couple of tracks played on the rather wonderful Subzero Soundworks podcast - a great mix of ambient and down tempo which is well worth a listen. A new show every two weeks - well over an hour of quality music. If anyone knows who does this show please let us know.
