- SHAKEN: The Genesis of a new era
In a moody Toronto jazz club, waits a restless bassist. Long after the soulful set has finished, Gerard Briz snaps close his guitar case and heads out into the night. Driven by the music in his head, Gerard roams the busy streets, searching without direction dreaming of what could be.
Meanwhile, Alonso Mendez has donned his headphones and is walking out of the latest hot-spot night club. The pounding bass which has filled the club leaves this DJ’s ringing ears unsatisfied, as he imagines a new wave of his music washing over the city.
Unaware of the chain of events which are about to be set in motion, these two strangers cross paths, as an unforeseen collision sets in motion the genesis of an era: the birth of two musical master-minds. Admist the caucophony of confusion, their recovery produces an infusion of “soul/funk/house”.
STIRRED: a blending
At the end of the third millenium, house, funk & soul were on the opposite ends of the spectrum. As the western world became faster, more complex, more rife with energy, the story of “Stereo Martini” begins. This was a time of absorption, of avant-garde ideas into soul music. In the late 1960’s, Soul and Funk was enriched enormously by artists such as Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Jackson 5 and James Brown, amongst others. All the while at the opposite end, the rock and roll revolution was being led by the likes of The Beatles and Elvis Presley.
By the turn of the millenium, “Soul” had to encompass an extraordinary variety of genres associated with electronic music. Admittedly this new “dance” genre, suffers from tacky excess and commercial blandness; as major record labels have jumped on the bandwagon with compilation cd’s that produce the once underground genre, entirely by electronic means.
Stereo Martini produces music never previously exposed on radio or through other mass media, and have now become the authority in this new blend.
“Soul/Funk/House”, shaken and stirred, straight or with a twist.....just as you like it.
